Local Volunteer Helps Cancer Patients Look Good and Feel Better
Norwalk, CT (February 9, 2015) – Thirteen years ago Stamford resident and cosmetologist Camille Laginestra had her first interaction with the American Cancer Society. Her employer at the time donated new wigs to the Society and it was then that Laginestra realized there was more she could do to help cancer patients throughout Fairfield County experiencing the appearance related side effects of a cancer diagnosis. She soon was a trained facilitator for the American Cancer Society’s Look Good… Feel Better program.
Some cancer patients in treatment are subjected to the physical side effects of lifesaving chemotherapy treatments, such as hair loss and skin changes. The American Cancer Society’s Look Good…Feel Better program helps patients with such side effects. The program, free to any woman with a cancer diagnosis and in active treatment, relies on beauty professionals and hairstylists who volunteer to teach cancer patients beauty techniques ranging from using makeup to simulate eyebrows and eyelashes, to using wigs, hats or scarves to hide hair loss. In each of these two-hour group sessions Look Good…Feel Better participants receive a free kit of cosmetics, valued at $200, for use during or after the workshop.
“A cancer diagnosis is very devastating and scary for anyone. I volunteer to do these sessions to make these women feel comfortable and good about themselves. Women walk out of the session smiling and looking beautiful,” commented Laginestra.
In addition to facilitating a number of Look Good…Feel Better programs across Fairfield County, Laginestra provides guidance, wig fittings, and styling by appointment at the Society’s Regional Center in Norwalk at 38 Richards Avenue.
“When you volunteer for a program like Look Good…Better you get more than you give. I’m helping cancer patients going through the unthinkable look and feel like themselves, said Laginestra.

“…I also need to let you know how much I appreciate all of the time you devote to doing wig fittings for our patients. You are such a gift to our organization across so many levels and I have no idea how we would meet the large number of wig requests in Norwalk without your dedication and commitment….You are one of our unsung heroines. Without volunteers like you we would not be able to assist as many patients as we do.”

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine was talking about her friend’s experience with wig finding. It was NOT the same experience as mine with you.
That’s when I realized that I should write you and tell you that my experience with you was amazing!!! You have such a gentle way about you. My mom says “Camille is an angel”. That does describe you!
Your smile and laughter brightened up the room. When we cried, you were there. When we laughed, you were definitely there And we just needed to talk about much about nothing, you were there yet again.
Thank you does not feel like it’s enough but THANK YOU!
Thank you and God Bless!
I just want to thank you for all you did on Saturday. Courtney looked absolutely beautiful!! So many of my friends commented on how great all the girls looked(myself included) and wanted to know who did their hair. Everyone’s hair stayed in place and looked great after a full night of dancing non stop. Thanks for coming on Saturday and taking care of everyone in such a refined professional and friendly manner. I will be forever grateful.
Camille is an extremely professional and talented hair artist. She took 5 of the photos I wanted and turned them into my dream wedding hair. It stayed in place all night and felt comfortable. She is also a gem of a person, and I highly recommend her for your wedding.
